The Ultimate Burning Man RV & Trailer Survival Guide: Protecting Your Rig & Preventing Damage

The Ultimate Burning Man RV & Trailer Survival Guide: Protecting Your Rig & Preventing Damage

Bringing a Recreational Vehicle or travel trailer to Black Rock City is the ultimate luxury: air conditioning, a real mattress, and a door that locks out dust storms. However, playa dust is relentless. It works its way into slide-outs, engine bays, upholstery, and A/C filters.

Without proper prep, an RV trip can result in thousands of dollars in cleaning fees or permanent damage. Follow this itemized Burning Man checklist for RVs and trailers to protect your rig.

1. Pre-Arrival RV Interior Protection

Do this before you cross the gate into Black Rock City!

  • [ ] Cover ALL Fabric Upholstery: Wrap every couch, dinette cushion, and mattress in fitted bedsheets, painter's drop cloths, or blankets. (This single step saves 4–6 hours of detailing later).

  • [ ] Walkway Floor Protection: Lay heavy painter's paper, thick cardboard, or carpet runners over all interior floor walkways. Secure with painter’s tape.

  • [ ] Outdoor Shoe Station: Place an outdoor rubber ring mat and a shoe storage bin outside the RV door. Enforce a strict "No Shoes Inside" policy!

  • [ ] A/C & Vent Dust Seals: Tape furnace filter material or HEPA sheet filters over exterior A/C intake vents and windows. Always run your A/C in recirculation mode—never pull fresh outside air!

2. Environmental Protection & Leak Prevention (LNT)

BLM officers actively inspect RVs for fluid drips on the playa. Leaks can land you a heavy citation.

3. Plumbing & Holding Tank Best Practices

  • [ ] 1-Ply RV Toilet Paper ONLY: Absolutely zero 2-ply paper, baby wipes, tampons, or trash down the RV toilet.

  • [ ] High-Heat Holding Tank Deodorizer Chemicals: Add double the standard treatment dose to handle 100°F+ temperatures.

  • [ ] Urination Bucket / Backup Pee Bottle: Encourage daytime use of a camp porta-potty or pee bottle so your RV holding tank doesn't fill up by mid-week.

  • [ ] Pumping Service Cash Envelope: Keep $60–$100 cash in an accessible spot to flag down United Site Services pump trucks driving through camp streets.

4. Power, Fuel & Generator Setup

5. Post-Burn RV Cleanup & Exodus Dump

  • [ ] Post-Burn Interior Cleaning Kit: Shop vac, microfiber rags, spray bottles filled with diluted white vinegar (vinegar breaks down the alkali dust), glass cleaner, contractor trash bags.

  • [ ] Exodus Waste Dump Plan: Know your authorized dump station stop beforehand (e.g., Pyramid Lake, Wadsworth, or Reno). Never dump graywater illegally!
